In the fall garden, when the summer annuals are being pulled out and the perennials are being cut back, it’s the perfect time to take note of how well each plant in your garden grew this year.
Some questions to ask yourself about each plant:
Plant Placement
- Did it look happy in this location this year?
- Did it fit the space well ie. size, shape, color?
Exposure
- Was there enough sunlight for it?
Soil Conditions
- Did it require extra watering?
- Does it require more, or different soil or soil amendments like compost?
Special Attention
- Does it need any special attention before winter such as a covering of mulch?
- Should plant supports be added for next year?
Then it’s time to make some notes in your garden journal for next spring. You will have all winter to think of new colors or combinations to try. Most gardeners are not always completely satisfied with what they have - their spaces are always evolving. The notes made in your garden journal will help provide you with new garden ideas for the next growing season.
