Pruning shrubs, bushes and vines is easiest after the fall winds have blown all the leaves off. Use your hand prunersto cut out some of those overcrowded or overgrown branches. But wait, don’t just toss those pieces of shrubs and vines in the garbage or on the compost pile - recycle and reuse your trimmings.
Recycling Uses for Shrub & Vine Trimmings
Tall branches are great for adding height and a focal point in fall planters or garden urns. Add some vines to trail around the base. When you change the flowering plants to winter evergreen boughs, the branches and vines can remain. Some favorites are red twig dogwood, curly willow, grape vine and bittersweet.
Branches that are not suitable could be placed around tender perennials. They will hold leaf mulch in and will collect snow to insulate the plants during the winter.
Don’t forget that in the spring, cut branches make excellent plant supports for tall perennial flowers in your garden. The natural appearance of red dogwood branches and curly willow will blend into the landscape.
