How to remember all those little jobs that need to be tackled in your yard, monthly or seasonally…..
Use that new gardener’s journal and start a checklist for each month. Make a chart listing the tasks to be done and highlight the time through the year that applies.
For me, the best way is in my handy little index card box where I keep all my information about planning and planting.
Here’s my list for January:
-get seed catalogs or go online to compare and finally to order vegetable and annual flower seeds (when your order arrives you know that spring is right around the corner)
-force potted bulbs
-start vegetable garden plans or ideas for new beds on paper
-research new plants / combinations of plants that you want to try (clip pictures you like and start a file)
-rinse the foliage on houseplants weekly to wash away mites or whitefly (set pots in the tub, spray them and let them drain well before putting them back in their places)
-when amaryllis or other bulb flowers have died, snip off those stalks but keep the plant watered and in good light for the leaves to continue growing.
-pile snow around shrubs and perennials to protect them during the colder weather
-feed the birds
Leave space on your cards or chart so you can add to your list - a gardener’s work is never done!
