Mom and I have been doing multi-daily garden tours for the past two weeks. The rock garden is always the last stop on the tour.

Friday, when we arrived at our final stop, we talked about how at this time of year, the rock garden resembles nothing more than a pile of rocks. Saturday we went to a local garden center and made a few purchases to try to remedy the situation.
The new additions:
Contorted Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Torulosa’)
Yellow Ice Plant (Delosperma nubigenum)
Snow-In-Summer (Cerastium tomentosum)
I love contorted shrubs and trees - imperfection is beautiful in my eyes. Either that or it’s because I’m a little warped myself! Mom picked out the Yellow Ice Plant and the Snow-In-Summer. After waiting so long for the snow and ice to disappear, I can’t believe we’re intentionally putting some in the garden.
In order to plant the new items, some of the rocks/stones had to be removed.
The rock removal process was delayed somewhat by the discovery of a toad. I don’t do toads. Thanks to my mom, a pair of gloves and the handy dandy garden trowel, I was able to get back to work relatively quickly and only slightly traumatized.
A few modifications, the three new additions, and it was all back together again.
The cypress adds a substantial shot of much-needed green. If all goes well, before too long there will be more green, plus white, yellow and purple too.
I’ve never seen one like that. Wonder what it is?
