July In The Garden - Photo Tour

Hey, I’m actually on time for a change! Today is the 15th of the month and I have a post all ready for Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day. Will wonders never cease?!

Typically, by this time of the summer things in the yard and garden are drying up. The grass would be changing from its lush green of early summer to a dull brown - crackling and crunching with every step taken on it. The foliage on the bleeding hearts would be an embarrassing shade of yellow, calling out to be cut back. Not so this year - all is still green and lovely. Allow me to take you on a photographic tour of our yard and gardens in July.

Blooming in the Backyard

Hosta (Is it just me or are the hosta blooms early this year?)

The rock garden has filled in and filled out.

Shasta Daisy? (I question this because it looks nothing like the other Shasta Daisy - wondering if the plant tags were mixed up.)

To conclude this tour I thought I’d finish with a picture from one of my summer planters. My favorite bloom - Gerbera Daisy.

It’s a real eye opener!

Hi! You have a lovely garden. Your purple spiderwort is such a vibrant purple! They’re one of my favorites.

Your yard looks like a really peaceful place. Mine is on the wild side, but I’m slowly starting to tame it. It’ll take a while.

Your gardens are so well manicured. It all looks so nice. I had never seen white spiderswort before. That’s nice. But your gerber daisy is a show-stopper!

Are the other Shastas shorter or taller, or in a different type of sunlight? I find they vary in their habit depending on location, but there are also tons of varieties of them, too.

I miss my spiderworts…none of them made the move with me last fall, as none were easy to spot and dig up when it was time to go. : ( Glad to enjoy yours, though.

Spiderworts are one of my fav’s too - probably because they bloom for so long. I was snooping around your blog - your spiderworts are lovely as well. The yard is only peaceful when my son isn’t in it chasing birds, helping to water plants(and me) or doing construction in the sandbox.

Don’t tell anyone but I took that picture right after mowing and trimming! It always looks better then (unless my arms give out and I lose control of the string trimmer). Usually I’m happy with calming greens and whites in the garden, but lately I’ve craved bright, hot colors. That daisy is a welcome jolt every time I look at it.

Two of the supposed three Shasta Daisies look like the one pictured. The third is more compact and the stems that carry the blooms don’t reach out nearly as far. They were all planted last summer in the same area, so their growing conditions are the same. Just one of those things that makes you go Hmmmmm. I still like it in spite of its differences. Glad you enjoyed the spiderworts!

Thanks for joining in for bloom day. I’ve got hostas blooming now, too, and usually have different ones blooming all through summer, and those look like Shasta daisies to me!

Thanks for the tour, it looks so cool under the trees. Seeing your photo of the Allium caeruleum reminds me that I used to grow them. I wonder what happened to them. They’re such a great shade of blue. How polite of your leaf miners to wait until the Columbines were almost done. Mine have no such manners.

Thanks for coming along - watch your step while exiting. It is cool under those trees - sometimes a good 10 - 15 degrees cooler than the backyard of my neighbor’s house across the street. Too cool some days - I like the heat. The leaf miners aren’t typically so polite, there are usually so many trails through the leaves they look white instead of green!

Cathy, Thanks for the tour! I hope you get to enjoy your gardens more than I, these days. We can get “busy,” can’t we? Beautiful flowers, and yes, your rock garden has filled in wonderfully.
